The Original High-Flow Air Filter
Since 1969 K&N Engineering has been designing, manufacturing, and enhancing High-Flow Air Filters for the automotive and motorcycle enthusiast interested in maximizing horsepower and acceleration. Since our humble beginnings we have designed and manufactured over 2,400 High-Flow Air Filters to fit most modern passenger vehicles and over 500 High-Flow Air Intake Systems to fit vehicles driven by enthusiast minded drivers. We not only have more applications than any other manufacturer of similar product, we invented the High-Flow category and the High-Flow Technology that supports it. K&N also makes thousands of racing and specialty type air filters and is the only air filter used at the Indianapolis 500 Race®.
The K&N FilterCharger® air filter is designed to achieve high, virtually unrestricted air flow while maintaining filtration levels critical to ensure long engine life. Our automotive OE (original equipment) replacement air filters generally add 1-4 horsepower. The secret to our success lies in the unique characteristics of our filter medium that was originally developed by K&N all those years ago in the dust, sweat and tears of desert motocross racing. We just wanted to win races and stumbled on a cotton filtration technology destined to be great. Our high flow cotton gauze air filter is washable, reusable and built to last for the life of an automotive or motorcycle engine. K&N air filters consist of four to six sheets of cotton gauze layered between two sheets of aluminum wire mesh. This media is then pleated and oiled to enhance its filtering capabilities and overall performance. K&N Air Filters were created for an environment requiring maximum horsepower and enhanced acceleration in addition to protection from the dirt and dust of off-road racing. The result is an air filter that allows dramatically more air into an engine, is washable and reusable, and will protect your engine for the life of your vehicle.
Engine Protection, Filtration
Anyone can flow more air. The trick is to flow more air safely. In our opinion we hit the sweet spot – an optimal blend of high air flow, filtration efficiency, durability and dust capacity. We take filtration seriously. K&N Air Filter media has been tested both in-house and by independent labs using the ISO5011 test developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. In addition we test many of our filters both in and out of the OE airbox ensuring proper fit and function. Our goal is to design filters with the maximum possible airflow achievable while providing guaranteed engine protection.
The Importance of Oil
A K&N Air Filter is made of 4 to 6 layers of cotton gauze sandwiched between two epoxy-coated aluminum wire screens. The cotton is treated with a specially formulated grade of oil causing tackiness throughout the cotton’s microscopic strands. The nature of the cotton allows high volumes of airflow, and when combined with the tackiness of the oil creates a powerful filtering media that ensures engine protection. In contrast, most other media can not maintain the same balance of airflow and filtration throughout the filter's life without sacrificing one or the other. With a K&N Air Filter, there is no sacrifice.
Never Replace Your Air Filter Again
Handmade in the USA and in the United Kingdom using only the finest materials, K&N OE Replacement Air Filters are washable and reusable. Regardless of what you’ve heard, it’s almost impossible to wash your K&N Air Filter too much. Inside our testing laboratory, we have washed and re-oiled one K&N Air Filter more than 100 times and it still performs up to specification. Depending on your driving conditions, we recommend cleaning your air filter every 50,000 miles. To clean and re-oil, purchase our filter Recharger® service kit and follow the easy instructions.
Fuel Economy
Fuel economy testing and mileage claims are a tricky business. Just ask the EPA, whose website states, “EPA’s fuel economy estimates are designed to allow consumers to comparison shop. Your fuel economy will almost certainly vary from EPA’s fuel economy rating. This is based on a number of factors, such as weather, road conditions, your driving and maintenance habits, and your use of air conditioning.” A lot of exaggerated claims are made in the marketplace by products claiming to improve gas mileage. K&N makes no general fuel economy claims, however we encourage you to try our air filter for yourself. Keeping air filter restriction as low as possible can be an important tool, among others, for maintaining high mileage.
HIGH-FLOW AIR INTAKE SYSTEMS SINCE 1992
We feel a high quality performance intake system is one of the best dollars to horsepower investments you can make and once again K&N is the clearly defined leader. We built our first kit in 1992 and haven’t looked back since. We currently manufacture over 500 different part numbers and our team of engineers is designing, building and testing new systems constantly.
BOLT-ON HORSEPOWER!
Our systems are built for horsepower. In fact on the 2003 Ford Mustang SVT® we get an impressive 30 horsepower. If we can’t increase a car or truck's horsepower we won’t build a system for it. It’s that simple. We establish a stock baseline horsepower with our in house dynamometers and then design our air intakes to get the largest horsepower gain attainable without causing a “Check Engine Light” to come on. Our horsepower numbers are not based on the single biggest gain from one particular vehicle but are an average of runs and vehicles. Many times an identical vehicle will perform differently so we want to ensure repeatable numbers you can count on. In today’s market place there are some pretty big cold air intake claims. We don’t make claims; we present the facts, backed up by well documented tests.
HIGH-FLOW TECHNOLOGY
How do we increase horsepower so consistently? It all starts with The World’s Best Air Filter. Even a K&N replacement air filter is limited by the size of the original air box but once we remove the air box we’ve got plenty of room to work with. Now we can apply our High-Flow Technology to a large conical open element air filter, providing more surface area for huge increases in airflow that turn into horsepower you can feel. The oversize air filter also captures and holds more dirt. This increases the service life before a cleaning is required (up to 100,000 miles for air intakes depending on driving conditions).
50 STATE STREET LEGAL
Many K&N Intake Systems are street legal in all 50 states and include a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO) number that ensures the kit has been tested to comply with emissions standards. EO numbers apply to the kit as well as the year, make and model it is being installed on. Systems with no EO number are street legal in most states but may not be used on emissions controlled vehicles in the state of California or other states adopting California emission standards.
EASY INSTALLATION
Sound complicated? That’s the great part, our air intake systems are easy to install. A typical installation can be done with a screwdriver, pliers and a ratchet-set in 90 minutes or less! We specifically engineer our kits to use existing factory holes and mounting points, making installation simple. The vast majority of our cold air intakes do NOT require any cutting or drilling.
